Hunter eyes test: measure your canthal tilt

One straight-on photo. The page finds your eye corners on this device, reports the angle in degrees for each eye and the average, tells you which band it falls in, and checks whether head roll is skewing the read. Nothing is uploaded.

Measure your canthal tilt

A straight-on photo with the camera at eye level, eyes open, nothing over the eyes. A phone selfie is fine if you hold it level with your eyes, not above them.

What this test measures, and what it cannot

“Hunter eyes” is a bundle of five traits: a prominent brow ridge, deep-set eyes, low upper-lid exposure, a positive canthal tilt and a long, narrow eye shape. One straight-on photo can measure exactly one of them with real precision: canthal tilt, the angle of the line from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner against level. That is what this page returns, for each eye and averaged.

It also reports an eye opening ratio (lid-to-lid height divided by corner-to-corner width), which tracks the long-and-narrow part of eye shape, and a head-roll estimate so you can tell a real tilt from a tilted head. Brow projection and eye depth are side-view relationships, and lid exposure needs a judgement about where the crease and the iris sit; a front photo cannot settle those, and this tool does not pretend to. The hunter eyes guide walks through all five traits with photos.

How the angle is measured

What the number means

The bands below are descriptions, not grades. Most adults sit between about −2° and +6°; the ranges section of the canthal tilt guide has the detail.

Average tiltBandWhat it means
below −1°NegativeOuter corners sit below the inner corners. Normal and genetic; also the most common camera artefact, so check the head-roll line and the camera height.
−1° to +3°NeutralLevel to slightly upturned. Where most adults sit.
+3° to +6°PositiveOuter corners clearly higher. One of the five hunter-eye traits.
above +6°Strongly positiveWell above where most adults sit. A few degrees of head roll can push a reading up here, so retake if the roll line warns.

Why your tilt can look negative on camera

A phone held above eye level, which is how most selfies are taken, tips the apparent corner-to-corner line down at the outer corner. A camera below eye level does the opposite. Head roll shifts each eye’s reading the same amount in opposite directions, and a wide-angle front camera at arm’s length stretches whatever is closest to the lens. If your reading moves when you change the camera height or straighten your head, the first reading was the camera, not your face. The negative canthal tilt guide covers the measurement conditions in full.

Can you have hunter eyes with a neutral tilt?

Yes. Tilt is one trait of five, and many faces that read as hunter-eyed have a level or only slightly positive tilt carried by a strong brow ridge, deep-set eyes and low lid exposure. The reverse is also true: a strongly positive tilt on an open, flat-browed eye area does not read as hunter eyes. Treat the number here as one input, and read the hunter vs prey eyes comparison for the other four.

Do I have hunter eyes? What a full scan adds

This page gives you one measured angle. The scan reads the whole eye area, front and side, inside the rest of the face: brow, orbital depth, lid exposure and eye shape, scored together with the other categories. The free SoftMaxx AI scan reads the eye area from one photo and shows your overall score, four pillar bands and your top priority; the numeric Eyes score is on Pro. No signup.

Questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is drawn onto a canvas in your browser and the face-landmark engine, served from softmaxx.io, runs on your device. The page makes no request that carries the photo, the landmarks or the result, and nothing is saved when you leave.

How accurate is the angle?

The engine places 478 points on the face and the four eye corners are among the most stable of them, but two photos of the same face rarely agree to the decimal: camera height, lighting and a slight head roll each move the reading by a degree or more. Treat anything within about two degrees as the same reading, and retake when the head-roll line shows a warning.

Does this use my free scan?

No. This tool is separate from the SoftMaxx AI scan: it measures one angle and keeps nothing. A full scan is a different page with its own consent step and its own monthly allowance.

What is a good canthal tilt?

Most adults sit between about −2° and +6°. A positive tilt, where the outer corner sits higher than the inner corner, is one of the five hunter-eye traits; a neutral or negative tilt is common, genetic and looks fine on plenty of faces. The number is a description, not a grade.
