"Hunter eyes" is a community term, not a clinical one, for a cluster of eye-area traits: a positive canthal tilt (outer corner higher than the inner), a prominent brow sitting low over the eye, little visible upper-eyelid skin, and a narrow, almond-shaped opening. In women the same traits occur, but the measured sex averages run in mixed directions: women's brows sit higher and their eye openings are slightly narrower, while canthal tilt is, in most — not all — populations, slightly steeper in women than in men.
That matters because the male "hunter" package is partly a masculinity package (low heavy brow, deep set), and the female-face attractiveness research points the other way on several of those traits. Below: what has been measured by sex, what raters actually prefer in women's eyes, and the parts of the female "hunter eyes" idea no study has tested.

1. The traits, translated to a female face
The cluster is the same in either sex — read the main hunter-eyes entry for the anatomy — but each component sits on a different baseline in women:
- Canthal tilt. Positive in most adults of either sex; on average slightly steeper in women in several populations (numbers below). A woman with a +7° tilt is near her population's mean, not an outlier.
- Brow position. Women's brows sit measurably higher than men's and are more arched, with the highest point placed medially in young women (Kraus and colleagues, 2019). A brow that is low over the eye is therefore a more masculine-typical reading on a female face.
- Upper-eyelid exposure. The one component with direct evidence in women: less visible upper-lid skin rated as more attractive in one study (Patel and colleagues, 2026).
- Almond / narrow opening. Men's horizontal eyelid fissure is about 0.7 mm larger than women's (van den Bosch and colleagues, 1999); women's openings are slightly shorter horizontally and, in one sample, slightly taller vertically (Packiriswamy and colleagues, 2012).
- Deep-set eyes / prominent brow ridge. Not measured by sex in any soft-tissue study we could verify — see the limits section.
2. How eye-area anatomy differs by sex — the measured numbers
Canthal tilt. In 300 Malaysian South Indian adults aged 18–26, palpebral fissure inclination averaged 4.72° in men and 7.04° in women — a 2.3° gap (Packiriswamy, Kumar and Mohandas Rao, 2012, North American Journal of Medical Sciences). A three-dimensional study of 147 young adults measured the canthal angle so that a smaller value means a steeper tilt: Caucasian women 171.5° versus Caucasian men 178.4° (women steeper, p < 0.001), but Chinese women 164.3° versus Chinese men 165.7° — no significant difference (Gao and colleagues, 2025, Quantitative Imaging in Medicine and Surgery). Among 42 Caucasian celebrities, tilt was 8.5° ± 2.1° in women and 6.5° ± 2.7° in men (Liu, Salinas and Sharaf, 2023). The pattern: ethnicity moves the mean more than sex does, and the standard deviations (2–3°) exceed the sex gap, so the distributions overlap heavily.
Brow height. In 320 people aged 10–89, "in women the eyebrows were situated about 2.5 mm higher than in men" (van den Bosch, Leenders and Mulder, 1999, British Journal of Ophthalmology). Brow shape also differs: young women's highest brow point sits medially, and "the brow shape of females assimilates toward a male shape with aging" as the brow rises and the lid axis drops laterally in both sexes (Kraus and colleagues, 2019, JPRAS).
Eye opening. The same 1999 study found men's horizontal fissure about 0.7 mm larger. Sex differences in fissure height and width, pretarsal skin height and crease height were also significant in a 164-person American sample (Price and colleagues, 2009, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery).
3. What raters actually prefer in women's eyes
Here the female evidence diverges from the male "hunter" story.
- Feminised over masculinised. In the classic Nature study, "subjects preferred feminized to average shapes of a female face", across UK and Japanese raters (Perrett and colleagues, 1998). A 2006 meta-analytic review confirms sexual dimorphism is attractive in both sexes' faces across cultures (Rhodes, 2006) — for women, that means femininity-typical features, not masculine ones.
- Larger, not narrower, eyes. Adults rated female faces with enlarged eyes as more attractive in every pairing tested, though only "somewhat" more, and the manipulations were extreme (±3 SD) (Geldart, Maurer and Carney, 1999, Perception).
- Tilt: yes. Female faces with an accentuated medial canthal tilt were preferred 93% of the time over unmodified faces (Bashour and Geist, 2007). In 60 female eye-region photos rated by 80 people, "large upward and lateral inclination of both eye axis and eyebrows correlated moderately to strongly with attractiveness", as did a large visible iris height (Prantl and colleagues, 2019, Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery).
- Low upper-lid exposure: yes, in one study. Among 318 images of young Black women, eyes rated attractive showed a mean upper-lid show of 8.15 mm versus 9.84 mm, pretarsal show of 3.76 mm versus 4.53 mm, and a steeper intercanthal tilt of 9.1° versus 6.6° (Patel and colleagues, 2026, Journal of Craniofacial Surgery).
- Brow height: mixed. One composite-face study concluded that "regardless of race, attractive faces have wide-set eyes and a lower brow position than average faces" (Rhee, Woo and Kwon, 2012) — but Prantl's raters rewarded an upward brow inclination. Position and slope are different variables.
So of the five "hunter" components, women's faces have direct support for two — positive tilt and low pretarsal show — and countervailing evidence on narrowness and brow heaviness.
4. Reading your own eye area
On a true frontal photo with the head level: the line from inner to outer eye corner against horizontal is your canthal tilt (women's population means run roughly 5–9° depending on ancestry); the skin visible between the lash line and the brow when looking straight ahead is your upper-lid exposure; the brow's highest point falls medially in most young women and drifts laterally and upward with age. Head pitch changes all three readings — a chin-down selfie steepens tilt and shrinks lid show — so compare only level photos. 5. What this cannot tell you
- There is no fixed "women have X° more tilt" number. The measured gap is +2.3° in one population, about +2° in another, large in Caucasians and absent in Chinese participants in the same 3D study. Ancestry moves the mean more than sex, and individual spread exceeds the sex gap.
- Whether deep-set or hooded eyes are attractive in women. No retrieved study rated either trait in female faces; neither "attractive" nor "unattractive" can be concluded. Rater panels in the eye-specific studies are small (10–80 raters) and single-ethnicity.
- Anything about orbital depth or brow-ridge prominence by sex. The soft-tissue anthropometry above measures surfaces on 18–35-year-olds; "deep-set" is not an operationalised variable in any of it, and the skeletal brow-ridge dimorphism is a forensic finding not covered here.
- The "ideal tilt" figures you will see quoted (about +3° for men, +4° for women) come from a clinical opinion review, not a measurement study; the "4.12° average Caucasian" figure comes from seven composite faces.

7. Common questions
Can women have hunter eyes?
Yes — the traits (positive canthal tilt, low visible upper lid, almond opening) occur in women. But two of the male "hunter" components, a low heavy brow and a narrow opening, run against measured female averages (women's brows sit ~2.5 mm higher; men's openings are ~0.7 mm wider) and against what raters prefer in women's faces.
Do women naturally have a higher canthal tilt than men?
In several populations, slightly: +2.3° in a Malaysian South Indian sample, about +2° among Caucasian celebrities, and a clear difference in Caucasians in a 3D study — but no significant difference in Chinese participants in the same study. Ancestry shifts the mean more than sex does.
Are hunter eyes attractive on a woman?
Parts of the cluster are supported: a positive tilt (preferred 93% of the time in one study) and low upper-eyelid exposure (8.2 mm vs 9.8 mm in attractive vs less attractive eyes in another). Narrowness and brow heaviness are not — raters preferred larger eyes and feminised shapes in female faces.
Are hooded eyes hunter eyes?
Hooding lowers visible upper-lid skin, which is one hunter-eye trait, but no study we could verify has rated hooded or deep-set eyes in female faces, so no attractiveness claim can be made either way.
What is a normal canthal tilt for a woman?
Population means run roughly 5–9° depending on ancestry, with standard deviations of 2–3°. A value anywhere in that range is ordinary; the widely quoted "ideal +4° for women" is a clinical opinion, not a measured norm.
