Mewing before and after: what those photos are actually showing

Almost every dramatic mewing transformation online is explainable without any change to the skeleton. Here are the six variables doing the work, why they are so convincing, and how to photograph yourself in a way that would actually detect a real change.

Most mewing before-and-afters are photographs of the same face under different conditions. That is not an accusation of fraud — the majority are posted sincerely by people who genuinely believe they changed. It is a statement about how easy a jawline is to alter in an image. Head tilt, lens focal length, lighting direction, body fat, time of day and deliberate muscle engagement each move the apparent jawline more than a posture habit plausibly could, and in a typical pair of photos several of them changed at once. 1. The six variables doing the work

Any one of these can transform how a jaw reads. In a typical before-and-after pair, three or four have changed simultaneously.

1. Head tilt

This is the biggest single factor and the hardest to spot. Tilting the chin down by even a few degrees compresses the submental area and blurs the jaw line; tilting it up stretches the skin under the chin and produces a sharp, defined edge. The same person can produce both photographs within ten seconds of each other. If the "before" is shot slightly downward and the "after" slightly upward, the comparison is meaningless regardless of what else happened.

2. Lens and distance

A phone camera held close exaggerates whatever is nearest the lens and compresses what is behind it. Step back and zoom in, and facial proportions flatten out considerably. Wide-angle at arm's length is unflattering to the jaw; a longer effective focal length from further away is flattering. Most people's "before" is a casual close selfie and their "after" is a more considered shot, which alone accounts for a visible difference.

3. Lighting direction

Light from above and slightly in front carves a shadow beneath the jawbone and reads as definition. Flat frontal light — a bathroom ceiling, an overcast window — erases that shadow entirely. This is why the same jaw looks sharp in one room and soft in another, and it is the variable most heavily exploited in marketing images.

4. Body fat

Submental fat sits directly under the jaw, and it is one of the more responsive areas to overall body composition. A person who took up mewing and also started training, sleeping better and eating differently — which describes most people who take up mewing — has changed the thing that actually alters that region. The posture habit gets the credit that the weight change earned.

5. Time of day and fluid

Facial fluid distribution shifts overnight and through the day. Morning faces are puffier, particularly around the eyes and lower face, and salt, alcohol and sleep quality all move this. A morning "before" against an evening "after" is a comparison of two different states of hydration, not two different skeletons.

6. Deliberate muscle engagement

It is possible to consciously tense the platysma and jaw muscles, push the tongue hard against the palate, or subtly protrude the lower jaw — each of which sharpens the jaw line for the duration of a photograph. Some of this is deliberate; a lot of it is unconscious, because people naturally set their face when they know they are documenting progress.

2. Why the photos are so persuasive anyway

Knowing all of the above, the images still work. There are reasons for that worth naming.

A useful test on any before-and-after you see: cover everything except the jaw edge itself and ask whether you can still tell which is which. If the impression collapses once you remove the lighting, the angle and the expression, you were reading those, not the jaw.

3. The teenage confound

A large share of the most dramatic transformations belong to people between roughly fourteen and twenty-two. That is precisely the window in which the male face changes substantially on its own: the jaw broadens, body fat redistributes, the brow ridge develops and facial hair arrives.

Someone who starts mewing at sixteen and posts a comparison at nineteen has documented three years of ordinary maturation. The posture may have been held perfectly and it may even have contributed something during growth — that is a genuinely open question in a way that adult skeletal change is not — but the comparison cannot separate the two. Neither can the person in the photograph.

4. How to photograph yourself so a real change would show

If you want to track your own face honestly, the goal is to hold every variable constant except the one you are testing. This is not complicated, but it does require deciding the conditions once and then not changing them.

  1. Fix the room and the light. Same location, same time of day, same light source. Overcast daylight from a window is the most repeatable. Never mix an outdoor shot with an indoor one.
  2. Fix the distance. Mark where you stand and where the camera sits. Use the same lens setting. If you use a phone, use the same one, and do not switch between front and rear cameras — they have different focal lengths.
  3. Fix the head position. Look straight at the lens with your eyes level. The Frankfort horizontal — an imaginary line from the bottom of the eye socket to the top of the ear canal, held parallel to the floor — is the standard reference and is worth learning.
  4. Neutral face. Lips together, jaw relaxed, no tensing, no smiling, no deliberate posture. If you are engaging anything you are photographing the engagement.
  5. Shoot front and true profile. Profile is where jaw and chin changes would actually be visible. Front-only tracking will miss what you are looking for.
  6. Same day of the week, same time. Morning versus evening is enough to invalidate the comparison on its own.
  7. Wait long enough. Thirty days is the shortest interval where anything soft-tissue-related might be visible. Anything shorter is noise.

The uncomfortable part of doing this properly is that most people who set up honest conditions find their photographs look far more similar than they expected. That is the correct result and it is the point of controlling the variables.

5. What a real change would look like

If mewing produced what its strongest advocates claim, you would expect to see it on a true lateral profile: a change in the angle of the jaw where the vertical branch meets the horizontal body — the gonial angle — or a forward change in chin projection. Those are skeletal measurements, and in an adult with fused sutures there is no credible published evidence that oral posture moves them.

That last one is worth sitting with. Forward head posture — the position most people hold at a screen — visually erases a jawline. Correcting it produces an immediate, real and photographable improvement that has nothing to do with the tongue. It is also far easier to change than anything skeletal.

6. Measure instead of eyeballing

The reason before-and-after photographs are so unreliable is that human judgement of one's own face is heavily influenced by expectation. The alternative is measurement against a consistent reference — the same landmarks, computed the same way, on photographs taken under the same conditions.
