A glow-up app is only useful if it can show you a before and an after that were measured the same way. The changes that make up a real glow up are well studied, for men and women alike: sleep, skin, grooming and expression. Skin colour evenness alone correlated with rated attractiveness, health and youthfulness at r > 0.40 in a study of 170 faces and 353 raters (Fink, Matts et al. (2007), Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology). The same people were rated less healthy and less attractive when photographed after sleep deprivation than after a normal night (Axelsson et al. (2010), BMJ).
None of that requires an app. What an app can add is measurement: a baseline, a ranked list of what to change first, and a re-measure a month later. 1. What actually changes how you look
- Sleep. 23 adults were photographed after eight hours of sleep and again after 31 hours awake; 65 observers rated the photos. Sleep-deprived faces scored lower for health (63 vs 68 on a 100-point scale) and attractiveness (38 vs 40), and higher for tiredness (53 vs 44) — all P < 0.001 (Axelsson et al. (2010), BMJ). Small per night, and it compounds.
- Skin. Evenness of skin colour correlated with perceived attractiveness, health and youthfulness at r > 0.40, and with looking younger at r = −0.45 (Fink, Matts et al. (2007), Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology; female skin only). In a randomised trial of 903 adults over 4.5 years, daily sunscreen users showed 24% less skin ageing than discretionary users (Hughes et al. (2013), Annals of Internal Medicine).
- Expression. In forced-choice experiments with morphed faces, "a happy facial expression could even compensate for relative unattractiveness" (Golle, Mast & Lobmaier (2014), Cognition and Emotion).
- Grooming and presentation. In a Tinder field experiment, the authors concluded that "a little effort in grooming profiles, especially for male users, goes a long way in attracting attention" (Tyson, Perta, Haddadi & Seto (2016), A First Look at User Activity on Tinder).
What is missing from that list is bone structure. The evidence-backed glow up is about what sits on and around the face, and it is the same list for men and women; only the products and the grooming differ.
2. Four things sold as a glow-up app
- Habit trackers: checklists for water, sleep and skincare. Useful for consistency; blind to results.
- Filters and editors: they change the photo, not you. Fine for fun, useless as feedback.
- Face raters: one score, no method. Many inflate: QOVES found four AI chatbots rated almost every face above the human average (see QOVES vs ChatGPT).

3. A five-point test for any glow-up app
- Does it give sub-scores by area (skin, hair, grooming), or only one number?
- Does the same photo get the same result twice?
- Does it use the low end of the scale, or is everyone a 7?
- Does it say how the score is produced?
- Does it rank what to change first, and separate what is changeable from what is not?

5. What this page cannot tell you
These studies measure strangers rating photographs. They do not measure how people who know you see you, and effect sizes from a lab do not transfer neatly to your life. No study has tested a "glow up" as a package. A score from any tool, ours included, is one model’s reading of one photo.
None of this is a statement about anyone’s worth, and an appearance score is not a diagnosis. If thinking about your looks is taking over your day or making you feel worse, that is a reason to talk to a doctor or a mental-health professional, not a reason to optimise harder.
